TESTIMONIALS
What our happy donors say!
I retired from Texas Historical Commission, Fulton Mansion, in 2010 but continued giving tours as a volunteer. There came a time when there were not enough volunteers and the Friends of Fulton Mansion Board approved a budget to pay three part-time docents. I agreed to be one of the three. Today, even though I live in New Braunfels, TX, I am the Secretary on the Friends of Fulton Mansion Board. I try to make every meeting and have only missed one in the last 3 years. There are many people, still involved, with whom I have worked all these years. I hope that what you take away from this testimonial is the strong sense of caring one gets for the history, artifacts, education, community and unity you come to know when involved with this great institution on the Texas coast. Along with a very talented staff you have a hard working seven-member Board working hand-in-hand to preserve the site and educate the citizens of Texas and the world (no exaggeration when you see the intake information at the visitation desk). Oh, and by the way, you learn a lot of great information through wonderful programming as you go.
I started as a docent, giving guided tours and information to the many thousands of visitors who visit the Mansion each year. It was extremely rewarding to meet and talk to so many visitors and I felt that I was making a difference by giving back to my community. I eventually ended up serving on the Board of the Friends of Fulton Mansion. It is a working board and together we are able to support the Mansion staff with much needed funding for quality family programs and historic restoration. It has been a joy to see children and adults enjoy the museum and events. Everyone leaves happy and glad that they came. It’s great feeling to know that I was in some way a part of that. Additionally, I have made some wonderful friends with fellow docents and Board members. Getting involved with the Friends of Fulton Mansion has given me purpose, friendship and made me proud to be part of the Mansion!
I joined the Fulton Mansion as a docent in 2006. A friend who was a docent at that time thought I might enjoy volunteering. She was right. I learned a lot about the Fultons and what they meant to the city of Fulton. It was educational to say the least. I have enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. Recently I met an architect who was involved in the opening of the mansion and at the age of 98, he is still a member. I have enjoyed every minute and every day I have been involved and hope to continue.
As a member of the Friends of the Fulton Mansion Board, I am honored to serve this iconic site by supporting its preservation, and the efforts of staff who provide year round programming for visitors of all ages. The true joy is knowing our work today will benefit generations to come.
The Fulton Mansion has been a second home to me in Rockport. I responded to an advertisement in the Rockport Pilot searching for docents sixteen years ago. Volunteering at the Mansion over these years has only increased my love of history and provided me the opportunity to foster lasting friendships with the Fulton Mansion staff and fellow docents. The Fulton Mansion staff continues to provide our community with an ongoing variety of programs throughout the year. As a life long learner, I’m amazed at all the interesting topics that peak my interest every time I volunteer. Additionally, the joy of sharing the history of the Fulton family, the incredible architecture of the Mansion and the culture of South Texas during the Victorian age is very exciting and so appreciated by our visitors. I highly recommend becoming a volunteer!
